Our aim for this last project was to finally complete our solution for the client's problem space.

PRESENTATION

One of the requirements for this project was to create a presentation that contains the final product, process and feedback of our client. I used a PowerPoint and bullet points to write my main ideas and elaborate more during the presentation. We also had to show our reflections throughout the whole process.

This final design is based on our clients problem space as well as our 'How might we' statement. In my case, my 'how might we' statement is 'How might we create a clean art/study space that could motivate the client to start and finish earlier using more spaces and organisers'

PROCESS

This was my final design on my 'design & develop' blog post.

I have shown it to my client and gathered some thoughts from others :

  • Can be too closed in (not good for people with claustrophobia)

  • Enough space?

  • Note spaces?

More details of the feedback will be on the 'design & develop' blog page.

CHANGES

Using the feedback of my client and other people, I decided to add and develop this desk more. For example, I examined her problem space again to see where I can focus the changes.

This was her desk and one of her problem spaces. As you can see, she lacks storage for her stuff, such as books and other bits of paper. I noticed that at the back of her desk, there was some sort of board on which she pins small pieces of paper and what appears to be a schedule paper.

I thought that adding a board, whether it's a whiteboard, chalkboard or a corkboard will be more practical and helpful to the client.

FINAL DESIGN

I knew that I wanted to make a physical model, see how it could work and so I can present it better. I used popsicle sticks and cut them to the size I needed. I used tape to bind the popsicles better so that it's not as obvious. The draft measurement was based on the space of the client's room and how big her original desk was as you can see from the photo on the right.

With these, I have created the final product with the exact measurement.

You can see the 'corkboard' at the very back of my design, I have also made mini notes and papers for references. There is still a lot of space for storage that is conveniently close to her and the desk is big enough for her to move around. To make it less closed in or suffocating, I have designed the top to be like a triangle so the light can come in easier.

CLIENT FEEDBACK

The client said, “ seems very practical and I really like the built in board that’s on the desk, it lessens the mess that are created by miscellaneous notes and stickies around my desk. The size is also just right and I would still feel comfortable moving around. There are also quite a bit of storage that is very close to me so it would be pretty convenient”

She didn't mention anything that I should change or improve on, maybe because she hasn't tested it in real life and hasn't used it that she doesn't know how it can be.

REFLECTION

My reflection was, I felt like I needed more variety of ideas, beyond just an app, desk or routine. I think that there are other advanced solutions that could work out and help the client the same way. I could have researched and managed my time better and I think more communication with my client would have made it better. Gathering thoughts apart from my client really helped and I could have explored range of ages and users, it could have given me more ideas as well as solving more problems.

I did pretty well combining the storage idea and the board idea for more organisation of the client. It solves more problem of the client with planning and such. I think using the corkboard, it can also improve the clients routine as reminders and planners could be put up and she would constantly have it in front of her with no distractions.

What I learned from this project is how to incorporate the problem space into an idea that would then be explored to later be the solution. I learned how to ask multiple questions that I will need and save unnecessary confusion and answers. I learned how to consider not just my client but future clients as well. For example, although the closed in space didn't bother my client too much, through asking other people for their opinions, I realise that other future clients may have a problem with dark and suffocation places. I considered the possibilities and worked my way around it.

As for relating my 'How might we' statement which was 'How might we create a clean art/study space that could motivate the client to start and finish earlier using more spaces and organisers', I think it worked out pretty well. My whole idea was to create more storage space to help her with organising her study and art equipments.
