The goal is for designers to understand the problem and try and solve it for their clients. In this project, we will use the pieces of information we got from the discovery phase and use them to create a specific problem statement. BRAINSTORMING We did some activities in class that helped us brainstorm some problem statements. We had six squares with questions and statements we had to finish. These statements had to be about the information and the problems of our client.
Patterns - People tend to leave workload until the due date - Tend to push the mess aside instead of cleaning right away | We met... - Students who love procrastinating instead of doing work - Students who choose to watch or entertain themselves rather than cleaning - Students who struggles to focus with messy desk yet leaves them messy - Students who bade their motivations on aesthetic views but can't be clean |
Surprise/Curious - Apps actually helps people study better - Nice stationary helps motivate them. | We were interested to learn... - That app actually helps studying instead of distracting students - Majority of students doesn't clean very often - Some people take an hour or more to clean and some only take around 10 mins. - That majority uses the deadline as motivations despite leaving it last minute - People have a pretty different aesthetic preference. |
Contradictions & Tensions - Wants clear desk but doesn't clean very often - Wants storage space but isn't very organised | It would make a big difference if... - Students do their work earlier - Cleaning right after their desk was used becomes an obvious thing to do - Their phone shuts down at a specific time during the day until a certain time so they have time to be productive - There was something to help them organise - There was a prize every time they were productive. |
My main focus on my brainstorm is about cleanliness and doing work at the right time to avoid procrastinating and cramming assignments. The stress for sure could lead to messy and an organised person as there would be no time to think or clean properly. I realise that on one of the statement I wrote about cleaning desk right after usage but if they were to cram their assignment then they might not have time or be too tired to do so, which can cause the desk to be left empty until the next cramming session. Another thing is, I put the helpfulness of the app as something surprising, however, the more thought I put in to it, the more it could also be Contradictions as it may cause students' focus to drift away from their assignments.
USER STORY
We were to create Empathy statement which required us to write statements from different perspective. This will help us see different sides and see problems from other perspective.
As a designer, I want to make or design something for my client so that I can make sure that their problem could be solved. As a client, I want to find solutions to my problem space so that I can keep doing things I like
As a Kitten, I want to be able to play with my owner and for this to happen, she needs motivations and time to play with me so that I can keep biting her.
As a person who struggles with procrastinating and cramming, I want to find a solutions which can help do my work earlier and better as well so that I have time for other activities and time to clean my environment that can affect me so much.
I have these 4 statements, although one is for laugh and a very very different perspective from normal. Anyways, these statements has stated what different people could be bothered about and what would the impact be if the problem is solved.
HOW MIGHT WE
The 'How might we' statement helps us questions ourselves and helps us think of varieties of solution that could help the problem.
How might we be able to help our client to be satisfied with their product.
How might we be able to provide satisfaction and create less stress to both the client and others who are affected by the same problem.
How might we be able to find a solution that is environmentally friendly and can be helpful to our client.
How might we create a clean art/study space that could motivate the client to start and finish earlier using more spaces and organisers.
How might we help with motivating our client to not be lazy and be more productive on a daily basis.
How might we teach our client to have a daily routine to clean desk or organised their problem space to create a less stressful environment.
How might we help our client gain more motivations and inspirations so they can focus and feel better about their art and problem spaces.
Out of this 'How might we' questions, there are few that definitely stand out and can be helpful to this defining process. For example, I think that number 5 relates to most people as majority of people or at least people who have the same problem space as my client could relate to not being productive as their entertainment comes first. Another one is number 1, although it didn't stand out in a very good way as it is very vague and could be for any problem space rather than the one we are trying to solve.
I will choose which statement I think could be the most relevant and helpful towards this project at the very end of this blogging process.
AEIOU
The AEIOU activity can help us obtain some datas and informations by quickly noting down things around the problems that may affect the clients in some way. This was the table that I have noted down while thinking of the problem space of the client.
Activity
| Environment
| Interaction
| Object
| User
|
Firstly, Activity. This shows what could the client be doing that can be affected on a negative way by the problems space. Basically anything that the client does on their desk that could create stress or reason for cramming and such.
Secondly, the environment. The environment is where the client could possibly do their activities. These environment however, could also create a mess and become a problem space for them, if cleaning and organising is their problems. As you can see, I have input a lot of places that a student or anyone would typically go to if they were studying or doing an activity.
Thirdly, the interactions are base on anything or anyone that may affect the client's problem space. For example, clients might get distracted from their assignments or cleaning or organising because the would rather go out with friends or family. Another thing is their studies. Due to numerous due dates or assignments, it could create stress and lack of time for the client which could result on places she normally go to do some work, becoming a problem or stressful space.
Fourthly, objects are the things that could be stressful for them. Obviously they are unable to study and focus due to the mess and items on their desk. I have also put electronic in their as they could get distracted by their phone or laptop as they will most likely have to use it for their assignments
Fifthly, the users. Anyone could have the same struggles and problem spaces, such as teachers, parents and so on. It may not just be due to messy table, it could be messy kitchen or car or just anywhere. It could be different for everyone but I'm sure that majority of people can hardly focus if their surroundings are messy or disorganised, which can create a problem or stressful place for them.
MIND MAPPING
After the AEIOU activity and the 'How might we', I have used the informations and details to create a mind map of things that could help the problem space. I had some options and things that we could do revolving that solution and then what it could lead to.

REFLECTION ON MY CHOSEN 'HOW MIGHT WE'
'How might we create a clean art/study space that could motivate the client to start and finish earlier using more spaces and organisers.'
This 'How might we' statement has been chosen out of the rest as it was the most specific and it relays the problem space very well.
With this statement, I could come up with solutions and ideas that may help the client with her problems. Of course my idea would include a physical items such as desk and organisers. However, I feel that this statement could also indicate using an app to motivate the client. Using an app or a virtual design, I could create an organiser or a reminder to help the client with their problem space. It could also include some quotes, mood boards, inspirations and more. Specially since my client loves to do her art but the mess and other negative space constantly stops her from doing so, an app that could maybe show her some art work or inspirations, can get her starting on her art again. Like the physical design, maybe more organiser can help organising her art equipment.
